Tassie Dhaba

24/3/2022

102 Weld Street Beaconsfield

(Proper website under construction at time of writing – tassiedhaba.com)

For locals but especially for tourists, a drive up the West Tamar is pretty much a dead certainty at some point, so we don’t think a write-up of a restaurant in Beaconsfield is out of place in our blog.

Put simply, this place rocks. We arrived early for lunch on a weekday (hence the restaurant appears quiet) but it wasn’t long before the place filled up with locals dining in and ordering takeaway – even calling in to make a booking for that night – but also with a huge family group of Indian tourists who’d obviously been told about the place by their countrymen. News of a good thing travels fast.

I don’t have much of a vocabulary for tastes and flavours in general – let alone for Indian food – so any attempt to explain exactly why Tassie Dhaba is so good would be pointless. It’s not like a photograph of the food will set it apart from others in this space ...

Could be anywhere, right? But the smells, the flavour, the tenderness of the meat, the generosity or portion size, not to mention the excellent service, have placed Tassie Dhaba at no. 1 on our Must Return list. Particularly since on the day before a wedding party had cleaned them fresh out of goat, apparently the most-ordered dish on the menu.

For Indian food the prices are on the higher side. (I say ‘for Indian food’ because even expensive Indian is cheaper than a parmi-and-chips at your local pub.) There’s an incredible variety of meat and vegetarian offerings, the breads are to-die-for, and the restaurant itself is warmly inviting, quiet and elegant.

I offered to bring my own goat next time, just in case, but I was assured that wouldn’t be necessary. We can’t wait to get back here.
