Unlike with Tassie Dhaba, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant as a hot dinner location. Sure, it has a few tables – and they’re usually occupied – but you’ll likely be sharing the space with a queue of patrons stretching out onto the street waiting to order takeaway.  You don’t come here to share a romantic meal or party into the night with a group of mates. Curry House feeds people, and they do it quickly and cheaply. But the really odd thing is that – in this case just like with Tassie Dhaba – the food is exquisite.
On a busy night the Nepalese and north Indian cuisine flies from the kitchen to the bain marie and is just as soon emptied out again in a well-rehearsed demostration of culinary ballet by the staff. You can’t even be guaranteed that what you want will be there by the time you get to the front of the line (but you’re welcome to wait a few minutes until it is). Doesn’t matter, just pick something else. Anything else. It will be amazing. Did I mention cheap? On one visit we ordered three large takeaway curries, rice and a couple of naans, and coughed up $64. It fed us dinner that night plus on three more occasions, having carefully divided up and frozen the remainder. A single three-curries-plus-rice-and-naan meal is $16. Ridiculous. Mowbray is home to a large Indian ex-pat community so it’s not surprising that somewhere like Curry House has emerged here. Next door are a couple of Indian grocers, from whom we’ve gratefully stocked our pantry with hard-to-find staples for our own cooking adventures but also with some ingredients we’re yet to find a use for but can’t wait to. That said, if there’s one negative about this place it’s that we no longer have the urge to cook Indian food. Over years of practice we’ve nailed butter chicken, and lamb and seafood dishes influenced by world-famous Dishoom and British Indian chefs, but when you can buy stuff this good from Curry House that costs less than the ingredients we use for cooking at home, our enthusiasm for spending a whole afternoon in the kitchen has diminished somewhat. Unfortunately for us, Curry House is a 45-minute round-trip drive from our place on the opposite side of the river. So we bought a bigger freezer. |
