It’s always offered a good selection of high-quality meals and sits comfortably in its spot as a reliable go-to joint, particularly for a loud lunch or dinner with mates. We had lunch at The Metz with a couple of mates from Hobart. It was a no-brainer because we didn’t know what kind of food they liked and so it made sense to find somewhere with a solid menu that had a long-standing reputation of popularity and reliability. You’ll find small plates of seared scallops, baked brie, and a crumpet with harissa pulled chicken.  Among the mains were a Korean beef dish, fish and chips, and chilli con carne.  For the life of me I can't remember what this was, but it was great. It’s all well done, nicely presented and good value for money (which isn’t the same as cheap). The small plates are mid-$20s, and the mains around the $30 mark, as are the pizzas.
It’s a big place with a big turnover with a good mix of old favourites and some left-field offerings. It perhaps wouldn’t have been on our list of destinations if it weren’t for our visitors. I’m glad we went, though. I don’t think you could go wrong here. Yes, there are plenty of more interesting eating options in Launceston – but ‘interesting’ brings its own perils, particularly if you’re in doubt as to your guests’ taste. |
